UPDATE 5.17: Joe earned his AKC PCD and CD (all scores in the 190's, most 195+, including a 198!). He also showed in rally novice. He's now qualified for the 2018 RNC and has also qualified for the Obedience Classic in Orlando in December 2017. He's rockin' the obedience world!
UPDATE 6.15: Joe earned his AKC BN and RN's! He finished them at the 2015 Belgain Malinois National Specialty in South Sioux City, NE in May! He earned his BN w/scores of 198+ for all 3 legs and his RN w/two 100's and one 97 (this has also qualified him for the 2016 AKC Rally Nationals!). He also earned his BH in June w/a 56/60!! Joe is currently working on getting ready for his CD and IPO1!
Joe is kind of an odd looking malinois, but don't let looks be deceiving! This boy is ALL mal! Joe is a really nice boy. He is an amazing working dog. Joe is highly toy motivated. He will do anything for a ball, kong, tug, etc. Joe is a great house dog; he will chill out and relax. He is crate and house trained. We believe Joe was probably a kennel dog in his past home, but he's doing great in the house now. Joe is scared of storms and when storms happen he will try to get out of his crate/kennel. Due to this, he has virtually no teeth left (he came into rescue this way). He has learned to not be destructive in his foster home when it storms, but he does get anxious and nervous. Joe can (and will) go over a 6' fence if he's scared. His foster home potties him in a fully enclosed, welded steel, kennel run and this works well for him.
Joe is good w/other dogs. We were told he's good w/cats, but we have not tested him. Joe is a high energy dog who needs jobs. Joe LOVES IPO training. He appears to have had training before coming into rescue and he simply loves it. Joe heels like a dream and easily passed his BH. Joe is working towards his IPO1. The tough part w/Joe is his noise sensitivities and his lack of teeth. However, we feel that he loves doing this and he's happiest when he can work. We want to find him a home who has experience w/that type of work and can properly manage him. Joe will be placed in a home who is experienced w/high drive dogs only. He requires a sport/performance home as well. Joe is a great dog and could be a very fun dog for someone who enjoys protection sports. He'd probably love obedience and agility as well.
Potential Malinois Adopters Please Note: We receive *many* applications from people who are retired military and law enforcement (and the general public). Many of those applications have experience with the malinois breed from those occupations. Please keep in mind that the dogs which are used in the military and law enforcement are specifically bred for those jobs. They have hundreds, if not thousands, of hours and dollars put into their training, and they have jobs 24/7/365. Those dogs are specifically selected for those tasks. THESE ARE NOT THE DOGS IN RESCUE. The malinois' in our care often have had no training and probably even fairly indiscriminate breeding. These dogs are normally the products of someone getting the breed and having no clue what to do w/them once their house is destroyed. These are dogs who are desperate for physical and mental stimulation; these dogs need jobs. They do not come ready trained and these are NOT the dogs you used to work with. This breed is bred to work, work, work (which is why they are awesome for military/law enforcement) and if they have that work/training/jobs/outlets, they are amazing dogs to work with. However,if they are not provided with that, they will destroy your home, your kennels, everything. They are also NOT "small" German Shepherds, in fact the breeds are not even remotely similar. Given that, unless you are willing to put in all of hours/training that the dogs you have experience with, have had, then a malinois (ANY MALINOIS) probably isn't for you, short of a retired MWD/CWD. Please be sure to read each dog's bio for their specific adoption requirements/needs.
