Helios is a fun, silly, busy boy. He's a typical malinois in that he likes to have things in his mouth. He has some toy drive, but seems to be happiest just carrying things around. He is very active an seems to have endless amounts of energy. Helios would be an AMAZING distance running partner, or a buddy for a very active person.
Helios is leery of new people when he initially meets them. He warms up w/in a few minutes, but is hesitant at first. Helios keeps his crate and kennels clean. He has played around on agility equipment and seemed to enjoy it. Helios would probably be a FAST agility dog once he learns the game. This boy can cover some serious ground. Helios is one of the few malinois we get in who doesn't necessarily need to go to a sport/performance home. Don't get us wrong, he still needs an insanely ACTIVE home who will take him to training, teach him new things, and give him a LOT of physical and mental outlets. Helios would do best in an adult home. He is good w/other dogs his size (he likes to play WWF style). He is not kitty safe. He will enjoy playing in a fenced yard and respects fences 5' and higher. Please do your research on this breed before applying. They are NOT German Shepherds and they are NOT easy going family pets. Helios will be an amazing partner for someone, but we will be very specific on his placement.
Potential Malinois Adopters Please Note: We receive *many* applications from people who are retired military and law enforcement (and the general public). Many of those applications have experience with the malinois breed from those occupations. Please keep in mind that the dogs which are used in the military and law enforcement are specifically bred for those jobs. They have hundreds, if not thousands, of hours and dollars put into their training, and they have jobs 24/7/365. Those dogs are specifically selected for those tasks. THESE ARE NOT THE DOGS IN RESCUE. The malinois' in our care often have had no training and probably even fairly indiscriminate breeding. These dogs are normally the products of someone getting the breed and having no clue what to do w/them once their house is destroyed. These are dogs who are desperate for physical and mental stimulation; these dogs need jobs. They do not come ready trained and these are NOT the dogs you used to work with. This breed is bred to work, work, work (which is why they are awesome for military/law enforcement) and if they have that work/training/jobs/outlets, they are amazing dogs to work with. However,if they are not provided with that, they will destroy your home, your kennels, everything. They are also NOT "small" German Shepherds, in fact the breeds are not even remotely similar. Given that, unless you are willing to put in all of hours/training that the dogs you have experience with, have had, then a malinois (ANY MALINOIS) probably isn't for you, short of a retired MWD/CWD. Please be sure to read each dog's bio for their specific adoption requirements/needs.
